We're one week on the road tomorrow. Five states later.
We made a couple of family visits on the way- Fowlerville with the Stawaras and then on to Indy with the Spearins. A fun time with both. Lots of laughs- good food and drink.
Since then we've been through Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee, where we were able to visit with our niece Samantha, who took us out for BBQ and to hear some music in Nashville.
Apparently we suck at state capitols because we only realized that Indianapolis was the capitol of Indiana when we saw it on the map. The same with Nashville. We have a tradition of checking out state capitols so we've added that to our list of places to see along the way (we had to skip Frankfort in Kentucky because it was Sunday and it was closed.) Next capitol is Jackson, Mississippi tomorrow.
We've also been to our first couple of National Parks- The Abraham Lincoln Birthplace and Mammoth Cave. Mike also got to taste some bourbon in Kentucky at the Jim Beam Distillery.
Probably my favorite thing so far has been Graceland. We took quite a detour over to Memphis to go there but it was so worth it. We only took the basic tour for about 1 1/2 hours. The deluxe goes for 3- 4 hours, but we didn't want to leave Chuck for that long in the car. The basic was still great, including an interactive iPad with a bunch of extra features. So well done.
Tomorrow we head for the Gulf Coast. There is a road that follows along the coast from the Alabama border to Louisiana. Mike's hoping we can camp. As of now we've just stayed in motels, mostly La Quintas, which are clean, cheap and pet-friendly.
Charlie is a big hit wherever we go. He's pretty happy as long as he's with us and his bed is close by.
Looking forward to the coast and more natural settings.
