State Capitals and their Capitol Buildings

We're learning our state capitals as we go.
Mike does 98% of the driving. As we're driving along I always have a complimentary map that I've collected at the welcome center at each new state on my lap.  I'll mention different points of interest on the map as we go by. At some point I'll notice the star on the map for the state capitol and we'll both be surprised to find out that Indianapolis, Frankfort, Nashville, Jackson or Baton Rouge is the capitol of it's respective state. Apparently this is a gap in knowledge for both of us.
We've had a tradition of visiting state capitols going back to our traveling days with Quinn and Grant. We'll stop in and do a quick tour that includes lying on the floor and looking up at the dome (if the capitol happens to have one- we are learning that it is not a requirement.) Lying on a cool marble or tile floor is especially nice on a hot summer day. We know we aren't the first ones to do this but it takes people by surprise (including the security guard and the sweet tour guide in the Mississippi state capitol.) Inevitably we'll be lying there for a while and when we get up there will be a couple of other folks who have joined us on the floor. It beats craning your neck.
We also have learned the difference between a capitol and a capital. I knew they were two different things but I had to look it up. I'm not sure what Mr. Cook's excuse is for not knowing. That must have been some lesson in his English class. At any rate I'll have him proofread this before I post it so if I got any of the capitol/capitals wrong I can blame it on him.
So- we add looking at state capitol buildings to our list of places to see. We found out that this is a quest for a lot of people. You can even buy a passport and have it stamped at each capitol. Mississippi is a bonus state with two capitols. The new one- built in 1903 and the old one a few blocks away. Both beautiful buildings although I can't say that I think much of the Mississippi state flag.
Onward to Baton Rouge and then Austin after a couple of days in New Orleans.

  1. Mike proofread this post and when I asked him if he got all of the capitols/capitals right he said "screw it, I don't know the difference."
